Melbourne is getting chilly, winter has definitely arrived, whether you were ready for it or not!


One person who knows about cold winters is Brendan Stegmann, venue manager of The Boatbuilders Yard, South Wharf. He has spent the past ten years skiing all over Europe & he’s got just the thing to warm your cockles. Raclette Thursdays, yes it’s a thing. Be ready for oozing deliciousness as a waterfall of melted Jean Perrin Raclette is scrapped over jacketed new potatoes & pickled vegetables, in the traditional Raclette manner.

Meat lovers can look forward to upgrading their Raclette with Sevens Creek Wagyu’s Pastrami. You’ve heard about these guys before, they’re passionate about paddock to plate, hailing from Strathbogie VIC, this locally produced 9+ Wagyu features on many of Melbourne’s top restaurant menus.

Some of you deny it, but you know when you are a foodie at heart. For the ultimate, winter foodie experience, pair your Raclette with The Boatbuilders Yard’s house made mulled wine. Mulled wine has become a bit of a Melbourne institution & there is no better hand warmer on a cold Melbourne winter’s evening.


Keeping with the winter vibe the Boaties kitchen has composed some exciting new winter additions to their already scrumptious menu. Starting with breakfast, forest mushrooms on toasted brioche or a tasty cheddar corn grits with andouille sausage crumb. Later in the day, we are looking at a crunch filled fish burger or grilled chicken breast with ashed goats cheese & for you sweet tooths, a sticky toffee pudding.

Now to the business end of the game & my personal favourites drinking food! Fried cheese curds with ranch sauce, cauliflower popcorn with harissa aioli & sumac lamb ribs. Highly recommend an order of any of the above for your next Friday sesh, but be warned, they won’t last long.


These fried cheese curds are making me Thirsty! There is a great new selection of craft beer on offer, starting with Goose Island Beer Company, these guys have just migrated to Melbourne, they are one of the world’s most awarded craft breweries. Boaties is serving these beers up, on tap. In the fridge, they have more craft brews from Bridge Road Brewers, Two Birds Brewing, Old Wives Ales, Mornington Peninsula Brewery & Pirate Life Brewing.

Finally but definitely most important, it’s time for a cocktail. Sloe Gin Spritz with blackberry & sage, Elderflower Gimlet with a thyme garnish, Peach Mule Cali Paloma & with chilli & coriander. If you are more of a classic cocktail fan an Old Fashioned is perfect for winter & I can sip on a Negroni no matter the seasons. The Boatbuilders Yard on South Wharf, definitely a great winter hideout and if it’s a cold day, I guarantee their fireplace will be roaring. South Wharf, where you can escape the winter blues.
